Illinois GGR Plunges as Neighboring States Increase

Illinois casino gross gaming revenues (GGR) plummeted by more than 21 percent in 2008.  A number of factors contributed to the decline, including a contracting economy, increased competition in neighboring States and a smoking ban in all public places and workplaces in the State of Illinois that took effect January 1, 2008.

Of the five States in the Midwest region that permit gaming, only Illinois reported a decrease in GGR from 2007 to 2008.

Las Vegas and Atlantic City Under the Microscope

During this recession, destination casinos have been hit harder than regional casinos.  Recent articles from the Wall Street Journal reported on a trend of consumers heading to regional casinos for a less luxurious gaming experience.  We put the Las Vegas Strip area and Atlantic City under the microscope to understand the different reasons contributing to this decrease in revenue.
