Maryland 2008 VLT Referendum

The Maryland VLT issue is finally headed to the ballot.  The proposal is a little different from the last time we reviewed this issue in 2003 and since that since that time support for expanded gaming in Maryland has swelled in the polls.

Evolving Landscape: Seminole Compact Approved by Feds, Miami-Dade County Slot Vote Passes

The Florida gaming landscape is changing.  The Seminoles have secured the rights to Class III slots and tables, and Miami Dade voters have decided to allow their pari-mutuel facilities to install slots as well.  The 50% tax rate in Broward has put facilities in that County at a significant disadvantage and and the additional machines in Miami-Dade County will slice up the market even more.  Although on paper there is still room for supply growth in the market, the prohibitive tax structure and competition from the Seminoles puts a significant strain on pari-mutuel facilities to get much profitability out of their machines.
